What is environmental education ?
Environmental education is designed to help everyone to understand their place in the environment, the need to protect our natural wealth so that everyone will have the necessary tools to ensure responsible behaviour.

ARIENA coordinates and manages a network of more than 45 organisations for environmental education in Alsace. It is therefore the key player in environmental education in Alsace and the Haut-Rhin.
The association also produces a brochure on "the network for education about nature and the environment in Alsace" which gives you further information on many organisations mentioned in the section on education and environmental awareness.

Alsace Nature groups many organisations for environmental protection in Alsace.

The association was created on 25 June 2003.
The charter of the Au fil du Rhin association :
- combines respect of the environment and economic development,
- applies an educational procedure,
- groups the three cross-border regions,
- initiates actions linking nature, quality of life and economic activity.
The upper Rhine basin has been a driving force in favour of sustainable development for many years. With French, German or Swiss initiatives, individual or in partnership, there is no lack of examples.

The centre offers an instructive, amusing walk through an animal park. The tour is free and on foot, following a trail which covers the whole park. This trail is flanked by many artifical ponds where several species of ducks and geese can be seen. An enclosure open to the public in 1999, also allows you to observe the coypus. The park permanently houses more than 150 storks, with twenty nesting pairs.

In accordance with its Agenda 21 signed in December 2001, the EDF group is resolutely comitted to sustainable development. EDF is in Alsace from south to north of the Franco-German Rhine with 10 hydroelectric power plants: it produces on average 20 billion kWh per year with no greenhouse gas emissions.
EDF is also an active member of Au fil du Rhin, which develops sustainable tourism in the Rhine strip.
EDF was also actively involved, notably with the Saumon Rhin association, in creating fish ladders at Liffezheim and Gambsheim.
EDF created the Maison des Energies and the Electropolis museum (see section on "leisure activities").

The forest walker's charter guides tourists by explaining the rules to be followed.
The ONF (national forestry commission) has produced an inventory of forest sites specially equipped for the public: more than 900 sites are listed in Alsace.
As part of the installation of the European Natura 2000 network, the ONF is also the State-appointed operator for producing the DOCOB, a document of objectives (guidelines defining site management methods), and acts as supervisor through contracts with local businesses.

Rhin vivant has produced public information tools along the Rhine strip, a Natura 2000 classified area.
They have developed 5 educational trails along the banks of the Rhine, to raise public awareness of the fauna and flora specific to this area: "5 adventures to discover the Living Rhine".
Two trails are in the Haut-Rhin : Kembs (developing landscapes) and Baltzenheim (Stroll along restored waters)...
They also encourage eco-citizenship, particularly through brochures encouraging responsible tourism.
Rhin vivant is also involved in a "Rhin Vivant" LIFE Nature programme which is developing a coherent conservation and restoration programme along the whole Rhine strip.
