Ecotourism

There are many varied definitions of ecotourism. This one is used in the European charter for sustainable tourism :

"Any form of development, organization or tourist activity which respects and conserves natural, cultural and social resources in the long term, and makes a positive and equitable contribution to the economic development and fulfilment of the people who live, work or stay in these protected areas."

The ARIENA (Association régionale pour l’éducation à l’environnement et à la nature en Alsace) (Regional association for education about the environment and nature in Alsace), an essential player in ecotourism in Upper Alsace, is in accordance with this European definition.

Whether on a European or local scale, there are different definitions, but they are all based on the same foundation : they are all based on the pillars of sustainable development, i.e. the environment, the economy and social affairs.

« Ecotourism offers an alternative to mass tourism. It is thoughtful tourism, which aims to raise public awareness of the importance of the natural environment.

This form of tourism is highly developed in Upper Alsace, which, located in the heart of Europe, is directly influenced by the Swiss, German and Austrian models, very advanced in sustainable development issues. Very few people really know what ecotourism is, but many practice it or would like to.

Therefore, the Association Départementale du Tourisme du Haut-Rhin (Haut-Rhin Departmental Tourist Association) has decided to produce the guide to ecotourism in Upper Alsace which should meet the public's requirements. »
