Located at the foot of the castle on the southern moraine slope, the 4 Wesserling gardens have very different atmospheres. High quality heritage trees surround each area. The whole constitutes the biggest garden in Alsace, listed as a Historical Monument.

  • Vegetable plots – succulent and full of scents;
  • The French garden – geometric exactitude and open spaces;
  • The English garden – mysterious and romantic;
  • Mediterranean terraces – exotic and colourful.

The Park management and presentation association applies a deliberate policy of presentation and restoration of these gardens.

Presentations

These provide the opportunity to bring the garden concept, as developed at Wesserling, to life :

  • respecting the environment;
  • integration into the landscape;
  • innovation.

Moulin à huile de Storckensohn et maison de l’ouvrier montagnard (Storckensohn oil mill and mountain labourer's house)

Association de rénovation et mise en valeur du moulin
20, rue de la Mairie
68470 STORCKENSOHN
Tel. : 03 89 39 14 00

The Storckensohn oil mill is a magnificent 18th century mill which was used to extract oil from rape seed, sunflowers and walnuts and to press apples and pears to make cider.

The Storckensohn mill was built in 1732 and worked until 1962. Walnut, rape seed and sunflower oil and peasant cider (based on apples and pears) were made here.

After more than 200 years in use and thirty years of inactivity, the wheel was in poor condition. In 1991, a group of volunteers decided to renovate it.

Close to the mill you will find the Maison Munsch (small workers and peasant museum) where you can enjoy the warm atmosphere of the old 19th century houses.

The Schlitte museum and wood trades

56, rue principale
68380 MUHLBACH SUR MUNSTER
Tel. : 03 89 77 61 08

The Association des Amis de la Schlitte (Friends of Schlitte) has set up a small museum at Muhlbach-sur-Munster with the intention of providing a memorial to forest activities before mechanisation, and particularly a very picturesque method of wood hauling: "schlittage". A schlitte was a kind of sleigh on runners, sliding over a track made of wooden cross-pieces and held at the front on the "schlitter's" back. A "schlittage track" has been reconstructed inside the museum. Visitors can also learn about the old carter's trade and the special equipment this activity required.

Opening hours :

  • from July to early September, every day from 15:00 to 18:00
  • the rest of the year by appointment for groups of more than 20.

For further information on…
