On foot…
In the mountains

Before setting off, make sure you are well prepared.

WINTZENHEIM: Le sentier de l’écureuil (the squirrel trail)

The squirrel trail links the Trois-Châteaux carpark with the carpark at Hohlandsbourg. This is an easy trail to follow and very peaceful.

Total length of the main trail: 3 200 m. A round trip is therefore 6 400 m or 2 to 3 hours of walking.

Designed to be easy, this circuit has no particular difficulties, no sudden slopes, steep climbs or descents and no obstacles to walking. There is no risk of getting lost so that every stroller can be confident in following it.

The duration is reasonable, the quality of the trail means that people with reduced mobility can follow it, if only for part of the way. Finally, the trail has stopping points where you can rest and read the presentation of themes concerning the environment you are crossing.

La navette des crêtes (the peaks shuttle) is a public transport service which gives you access and mobility along the peaks route on Sundays and bank holidays.

The High Vosges attract many people, which is reflected in heavy traffic which generates sound, visual and atmospheric pollution, spoiling the image and tranquility of these places.

This is why the peaks shuttle, the only alternative to private vehicles, aims to ensure the durability of the environmental and landscape quality of the main peak which is a major drive for economic and tourist development in the range.

"Walk with the TER", Club Vosgien

This guide describes 51 one-day and half-day walks as well as nine walks lasting two to five days. All these routes are in Alsace, Lorraine and northern Franche Comté.

It is the first time in France that a hiking guidebook has been entirely designed to encourage the use of public transport, in this case SNCF trains and buses, to and from hiking sites. With this guide, the Club Vosgien Federation has taken an innovative step. On the one hand it acknowledges what has already been achieved in Alsace, as a pilot region, to encourage the use of the train and on the other hand, the management of passenger transport in its TER network by Lorraine regional authorities.

It is strongly recommended to use public transport to reach hiking sites. Indeed, unlike cars, trains and buses give you the time to recover in peace from the effort expended, without worrying about any kind of responsibility for people who might be transported

At the end of every week, an authentic steam train takes you from Cernay to Sentheim "the old-fashioned way".

Extract from the website of the Association du train de la Doller :

"The locomotive's exhaust is quite noisy on climbs, then the train stops at a little flower-decked station, an employee gets down to turn the handle on the barrier, another stops the cars in their wild race, with a red flag. The passengers at the windows, actors as well as spectators, observe all these activities, in a life-size reconstruction, bathed in the odours of smoke and hot oil. The tourist experience is enhanced by the bucolic pleasure of the legendary milk trains talked about by our parents."

Mountain biking in the Ballons Des Vosges Regional Nature Park

For sports lovers, a mountain bike can be an excellent means of transport, as long as certain simple rules are obeyed, to prevent damage to the natural environment.

The PNRBV (Ballons des Vosges regional nature park) has produced a little brochure called "le VTTiste ballons des Vosges" (mountain biking in the Ballons des Vosges) which explains how to behave on a mountain bike. The basic rule seems to be not to leave the mountain bike trails.
The Park offers nearly 100 marked trails, not forgetting that nature is fragile.
Furthermore, there are many places to rent a mountain bike in the PNRBV area. Information is available at the nearest tourist information office.

How can you explore nature, via country lanes and mid-mountain trails, when you do not have the use of your legs or tire very quickly when walking? In 1987, Joël Claudel, parent of a handicapped child, found a solution which gained admiration: he fixed a wheel under a seat resting on stretcher poles, thus creating an accessible means of transport for walking, which he baptised the Joëlette. Over the years, it has been perfected, gaining in comfort for the rider and in lightness for the carriers.

On foot, on snow-shoes, by mountain or trail bike or by Joëlette, explore the sumptuous landscapes in the heart of an intensely natural environment, discover the heritage and regions of Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté.
