They say that traditions are disappearing... Certainly not in Alsace which, for many years, has organized a series of events which are unique in France, devoted to preparing and celebrating Christmas.
From the first weekend in Advent (25 November), through the four weeks leading up to Christmas and on to Epiphany (6 January), Alsatians all take part in these, in an enthusiastic and friendly atmosphere.
The Land of Stars, the Land of Songs and Textiles and the Christmas gatterings, all represent a symbol attached to traditional, cultural, craft or natural heritage of the region. Spread throughout Upper Alsace, each of the 3 'lands' takes on a specific identity, a particular atmosphere, an original way of celebrating Christmas, always based on a tradition nurtured with care and pride.
To discover or rediscover the spirit of old-fashioned Christmases, let yourself be tempted to the 3 Christmas lands in Southern Alsace, where original events are organized for visitors. There is something for every age and every taste, both outdoors (street shows reviving legendary characters, processions, illuminations, fir trees, giant Advent calendars... ) and indoors (living nativities, exhibitions by glass makers and potters, concerts, theatrical and dance productions, evenings with story-tellers, miscellaneous creative workshops, cookery courses... ). Some events start at the beginning of Advent and take place every day.
Others are held at weekends or once only. Still others extend over the Christmas period to Epiphany. But all, without exception, are based on the heart and soul of Alsatian heritage and its customs.
