Presented in a fairytale setting, more than 450 objects describe the evolution of optics over the past three hundred years, in fields as different as astronomy, the navy, topography, microscopy, lasers and holography.
Unique in France, the museum also refers to the regional technical heritage, recalling that Alsatian mechanical engineers and scientists (Jeker, Kalt, Thomas, Silbermann, Alfred Kastler – Nobel Prize for physics), have contributed to the development of optics and precision mechanics.
The museum was also rewarded by the Alsace Foundation in 1993.

Installed in an old Dominican convent founded in 1252, this museum houses a large collection of sculptures and Rhenish paintings from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, archeology, popular art and modern art collections.
The central work of art in the museum is the Issenheim altar piece, an impressive polyptic sculpted by Nicolas de Haguenau around 1510 and painted by Mathias Grünewald from 1512 to 1516. This assembly is considered to be a major part of the world's Art history. The gothic cloister, constructed from 1280 to 1289, is said to be the most complete in Alsace.
